Sponsoring Your Spouse or Partner: What to Prepare Before Applying
A family sponsorship application should tell a clear, accurate story supported by the required documents. Before collecting photographs or filling out forms, confirm that the sponsor is eligible and that you are using the correct application instructions for your relationship and circumstances.
Check the sponsor’s eligibility first
IRCC’s basic eligibility rules require a sponsor to be at least 18 and to be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act. Other eligibility conditions also apply. Canadian citizens living outside Canada must show that they plan to live in Canada when the sponsored family member becomes a permanent resident. Permanent residents living outside Canada cannot sponsor from abroad.
Use the correct relationship category
Spouse, common-law partner and conjugal partner are distinct categories. Your relationship circumstances and where the applicant lives affect the instructions you should follow. Do not choose a category simply because its name sounds closest to your situation. Read the official guide and the applicable checklist before preparing the application.
Organize a consistent timeline
Create a timeline of key relationship events, visits and periods of living together. Compare it with addresses, travel records and the dates entered on the forms. Where the checklist asks for relationship evidence, select relevant material that helps explain your history. More pages are not automatically better than clear, well-organized evidence.
Check name spellings, previous addresses and civil status documents carefully. Follow the instructions for translations and any country-specific documents. If a required item is unavailable or your circumstances need explanation, address that clearly rather than leaving an unexplained gap.
Review the full application
Use the current IRCC checklist as your final review tool. Confirm that every applicable question is answered and every required item is included. Relationship evidence is only one part of the application; it does not replace the other eligibility and admissibility requirements or guarantee approval.
