Express Entry

For skilled workers considering permanent residence through the federal system.

By Patrick Leong · R506679 · Reviewed 11 October 2026

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry manages applications for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program and Canadian Experience Class. Eligibility for a federal program comes first; an invitation is a separate step.

What changed for category-based selection?

Current categories cover French-language proficiency; healthcare and social services; STEM; trades; education; transport; physicians, senior managers and researchers with Canadian work experience; and skilled military recruits. Each category has its own requirements.

What does a category mean for my application?

A category is an invitation selection method within Express Entry, not a separate immigration program. Candidates must meet federal program and round requirements. Eligible candidates are ranked by their Comprehensive Ranking System score; category eligibility does not guarantee an invitation.

What should we review?

Your occupation and NOC, work history, language results, education, Canadian experience and CRS factors. We can review whether a federal route or a provincial option deserves closer attention.
