Are study and work permits permanent residence?
No. Study permits and work permits authorize temporary activities under their respective conditions. A future permanent residence pathway requires a separate eligibility assessment.
What should students review?
The institution and program, study permit requirements, finances, purpose of study, and any rules affecting post-graduation work permit eligibility. Graduation does not automatically lead to permanent residence.
What should workers review?
The type of permit, employer and job offer where required, applicable exemptions or labour market requirements, status and timing. Open work permits are available only to eligible categories.
How do we approach longer-term planning?
We consider temporary status and potential permanent residence options separately. Rules can change, so the plan should be reviewed against official guidance before applying.
