Which Canadian immigration pathway should you explore first?

Start with your goal, then check the rules of the relevant programme. Permanent residence, temporary work, study and joining family are different routes. A popular programme or a high score is not a substitute for eligibility.

Information checked against the official resources linked below on 13 October 2026. This is general guidance; it does not determine your eligibility or guarantee an immigration outcome.

If your goal is permanent residence through skilled work

Explore Express Entry if your background may fit one of the three federal programmes it manages: the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker Program or Federal Skilled Trades Program. Their work experience, language and other requirements differ. Check the applicable programme before focusing on ranking scores.

Read IRCC’s Express Entry eligibility comparison and 101Migration’s Express Entry guide.

If you want to settle in a particular province

A Provincial Nominee Program may be worth exploring when your experience and settlement plans fit a specific provincial stream. Requirements and nomination places vary. There are Express Entry and non-Express Entry processes, so do not assume every nomination follows the same application route.

Check IRCC’s Provincial Nominee Program overview and the province’s own current instructions. See 101Migration’s provincial nominee guide.

If your goal is family reunification

Review the relevant family sponsorship route and the requirements for both the sponsor and the person being sponsored. The relationship alone does not establish eligibility. Start with IRCC’s programme finder and 101Migration’s family sponsorship guide.

If you have an employer connection in Atlantic Canada or a smaller community

Explore the Atlantic Immigration Program or the Rural and Francophone community pilots as appropriate. These routes have employer and location requirements as well as applicant requirements. A job offer alone is not an approval.

Use IRCC’s programme finder to reach the official instructions. Read the Atlantic pathway overview or community pilot overview.

If your immediate goal is study or temporary work

Start with the relevant permit requirements. Temporary residence and permanent residence are separate decisions: a study plan or work plan should not be presented as a guaranteed permanent residence route. Review IRCC’s programme finder and 101Migration’s study and work guide.

What should you prepare before a consultation?

Preparing this summary helps a consultation focus on the questions that need individual review. Use the website’s assessment or consultation process for personal details; do not post identity documents or application history in public comments.
